The blues is a vast genre, full of different rhythms, licks and forms. I thought I’d simplify the blues down to three distinct rhythm guitar parts – the march, the shuffle and the rhythmic hits –  and show you how to layer them to create a big sound.

Learning each of these parts is an excellent way to give yourself some flexibility in a jam session with friends. If your buddy is playing the march, for example, you can play the hits or the shuffle. If he’s playing the hits, you can play the march or the shuffle. Any combination works together and they all sound great!
